“But Lot's wife looked back, and she became a pillar of salt.”
Gen. 19:26
It was in looking back that Lot's wife turned into a pillar of salt. Why a pillar of salt?
Why not a pillar of stone or marble? I believe it's a symbolic reminder for us. Salt
exposed to certain elements causes it to lose it's saltiness.
She looked back in disobedience and turned to salt. Sin causes us to lose our saltiness.
Through our sin we expose ourselves to the elements of the world. The elements ruin the
salts flavor. Our lives exposed to sin hinders our relationship with Christ and our witness
to others- our flavor.
She looked back- boy, I could just stop there. In my life looking back over my shoulder exposes me to the elements of unbelief. Each time I look back and see those negative flashes from the past another piece of me became as a pillar of salt. Hardening areas of disappointment and bitterness, causing the saltiness of my faith to lose it's flavor. If we
continue to keep looking back over our shoulders by living in sin, disobedience and in the
past, a pillar of salt we will become. A pillar of salt, standing out in the elements losing it's saltiness, it's purpose and it's usefulness.
Lot and his family were living among the “elements”. How close are we allowing ourselves to live to the “elements” of this world? How long are we going to continue looking behind us? Don't tarry there, let's fix our eyes on Him then run and not look back.
